4 Fun Techniques to learn English outside the classroom
By: Ana Jimena Hernandez
Learning English is everyone's primary objective here. But sometimes it seems that nothing done is enough. People can be very impatient and don´t take the time to learn and do it well.
In previous posts, we have mentioned many ways to improve English. Even when no method makes miracles and the best way is studying English at school, there are some fun and curious techniques that will probably help to strengthen what you have learned, and which will make you have a lot of fun. Here we present four amusing and/or unusual ways to use your free time and learn English:
1. Learn while you sleep
If you love sleeping, this technique is for you. According to two researchers from the University of Chicago, in the United States, there is a phase of sleep known as REM, Rapid Eyes Movement and during this phase, according to experts, the brain is as active as during wakefulness, and that is why it is possible to learn English or any other subject. Remember that it is not something magical, but you could give it a go. The technique consists of placing audio in English during the night so that the brain can process what it listens to even when it is asleep. Don’t you think is it great? Yes, it's possible to do something productive and sleep at the same time.
2. Take advantage of your idol
Surely there must be a celebrity who speaks English and whom you love, perhaps a singer, an athlete or a film actor. They are famous because of their followers, so you deserve a bit of that help back. Well, now you are allowed to spend hours "stalking" them (in a legal kind of way!), watching their movies or singing their songs, listening to their interviews, following them on all social networks. Use anything that is related to them, but do it in English. Nobody will say again that you are wasting your time because without realising it you will be progressing in learning the language.
3. Talk to yourself
There's no one better than yourself to talk and discuss interesting topics and opinions. It is said that we are the best self-critics, so don't miss the opportunity to speak in English to yourself. You can do it anytime and anywhere. You don't need to make an appointment, and you don't have to worry about waiting for anyone. You will always love the topic of conversation, and you will even be free to say whatever you are thinking. There will be no one to force you to say otherwise. Practice English with yourself. If you can, record those conversations so you can better analyse your mistakes and identify your successes
4. Follow Social Media accounts in English
Do you love memes or watching funny videos on YouTube? There are thousands of entertainment accounts in English that you can follow and that you will surely enjoy. Social networks are the best strategy to learn while having fun, so take advantage of the time you spend on them every day and start following accounts in English that you find interesting. In the beginning, it is likely that you do not understand every joke, but with the help of the English classes at Discover English (or at your school) you will do it, and in the end, you will begin to share those funny posts with your classmates. Spend time on social networks + improve English + help other international students to improve their English = guarantee of success.
Remember, using these tricks alone won´t be much help; however, they are fun techniques that allow you to take advantage of activities that are not useful by themselves or apparently, that are not very related to learning.
If you practice any of these methods every day after class, you will probably start to enjoy learning English more, which will, therefore, make you learn much faster.
And as we've already said, it's not about magic; it's about making the learning process more fun.
