“Guide to renting in Australia”
(The information below has been complied by an independent source and not Discover English).
Here are a few pointers on how to find somewhere to live while you're studying with Discover English.
1.) Be specific about the area you want to live in and the amount you can afford to pay. Melbourne is a pretty big place, so an easy way to decide where you'd like to live is to stroll around a few neighbourhoods and see if you'd feel comfortable there.
2.) Keep transport links in mind and make sure you'll find it easy to travel to and from the Discover English campus. Some property websites, like http://www.nestoria.com.au for example, present their rental properties on maps that also show local transport stops and stations. If you're planning to use a car then you need to make sure that you've somewhere to park it!
3.) Let technology help you. You'll find many accommodation options are listed online, and while school noticeboards and newspapers will have some ads. That being said, you'll find more in one place if you look on the Internet.
Many Australia real estate agents manage rental properties but they're often not particularly helpful to potential tenants, unless you have a large budget the best they're likely to offer you is a list of their properties and a map. If you find a property you're interested in and you have questions or want to view the property it's a good idea to ask for the agent who's managing the property by name when you call – they're the ones who will be most likely to be able to answer your questions. If you're searching for property on the Internet the listing should give you all their details. Phone them, and if they don't answer leave a message, but also send them an email so that they have all your details in written form. If you really like a property you might need to chase the agent – don't be shy. One important thing to note: In Australia it's illegal for an agent to agree a long term property rental without you having viewed the property you're renting. Short term rentals you can often arrange over the phone.
